Comments about the concept of guanxi:

 

"I taught in China in 1985-86, and guanxi was always talked about in hushed tones.

At that time, many actions that occurred as a result of guanxi were either against the law or against Chinese communist party policy."

 

"My impressions are from the 70s and 80s, but there was a definite negative slant on the term then. It was a throw-back to the old world where it was more important who you knew (or who your parents knew) than what you knew. It was always mentioned as something important, but often somewhat sleazy."
